Could Plant-Based Diets Affect Bone Health? What Recent Research Suggests

Clinical Nutrition Perspective from Bacchus Marsh

A Risk of Hip Fracture in Adults’ Study Raises an Important Question

Plant-based diets are often associated with many health benefits.

However, recent research by Ballarin et al., 2025 suggests there may be a potential link between certain plant-based diets and increased risk of hip fractures.

This doesn’t mean plant-based eating is harmful — but it does highlight the importance of how the diet is structured.

What Did the Research Look At?

The study explored the relationship between dietary patterns and bone health outcomes, particularly:

·         Risk of hip fractures

·         Long-term dietary habits

·         Differences between omnivorous and plant-based approaches

Some findings suggested that certain plant-based patterns — especially when not well planned — may be associated with higher fracture risk.

Why This Might Happen

From a clinical nutrition perspective, bone health relies on consistent intake of key nutrients such as:

·         Protein

·         Calcium

·         Vitamin D

·         Other supporting nutrients involved in bone metabolism

If a plant-based diet is lacking in some of these areas, it may impact long-term bone support.

It’s Not About “Plant-Based vs Not”

This is where context matters.

A well-structured plant-based diet can still support overall health — including bone health.

However, issues may arise when:

·         Protein intake is too low

·         Vitamin D and Calcium-rich foods are not included regularly

·         Dietary variety is limited

·         Nutritional needs are not fully considered

What This Means for You

If you follow — or are considering — a plant-based approach, the key takeaway is:

👉 It needs to be intentional, not just restrictive

In my clinical work in Bacchus Marsh, I often see that outcomes depend less on the label of the diet, and more on how it is applied in real life.

A Practical Approach to Bone-Supportive Nutrition

Rather than focusing on strict dietary labels, a more helpful approach is:

·         Including a variety of nutrient-dense foods

·         Being mindful of key nutrients involved in bone health

·         Adjusting your approach based on your individual needs

When to Seek Guidance

If you are:

·         Following a plant-based diet

·         Concerned about bone health

·         Unsure if your nutrition is balanced

It may be helpful to review your current approach.
